Dr Jimmy Lam (Urologist)
I completed my medical degree with honours in 1996 and commenced my internship and two years of surgical residency at the St George Hospital, Kogarah gaining a sound grounding for general medicine and a board range of general and subspecialty surgical discipline. I undertook one year of unaccredited general surgical training at the Gosford/ Wyong hospital and gained experience in general surgery, vascular surgery and urology. The following year I successfully entered into the Advanced General Surgical Training program in New South Wales and over the next 2 years acquired extensive experience in vascular surgery, colorectal, general surgery and laparoscopic surgery.
In 2002 I successfully applied and entered the Advanced Accredited Urology Training program and was relocated to Adelaide. Over the next three years I worked at all three of the major teaching hospitals in Adelaide (Queen Elizabeth, Repatriation General/ Flinders Medical Centre, Royal Adelaide Hospital) where I gained a broad urological experience in endoscopic, minimally invasive, laparoscopic as well as open and reconstructive urology.
I successfully passed the FRACS Part II Urology fellowship examination in Oct 2005 and in 2006 commenced my fellowship in urology at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. During this year I have consolidated my experience in general urology, both in endoscopic and open surgery and fluoroscopic urodynamics. I have gained further extensive experience in minimally invasive laser stone surgery, advance laparoscopic techniques/surgery (laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, nephrectomy, pyeloplasty), urinary continence/prosthetic surgery (SPARCs, artificial urinary sphincter, penile prosthesis) and open uro-oncological and reconstructive urological surgery.
In January 2007, a group of 3 other urologists and myself visited a provincial and a metropolitan hospital in Vietnam for two weeks. With the generosity of various trade and hospitals we were able to donate much needed equipments to the local urologists (including 4 ureteroscopes, a lithoclast and assortment of disposable stents, guidewires and books). Our aim was to provide surgical services and equipment to teach local urologists and to improve the standard of care to Vietnamese patients. We were able to establish the needs of several hospitals and aim to set up an ongoing outreach program to send urologists there on an annual basis.
In March 2007, I received a grant from the Australasian Urological Foundation to attend an International Preceptorship in Laparoscopic Urology with Professor Inderbir Gill at the Cleveland clinic in Cleveland Ohio.
I returned to Adelaide in late April 2007 and have taken up a VMO appointment in Urology at the Repatriation General Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre that commenced on the 30/4/07. I provide an on call consultant service there, as well as outpatient clinic and operating lists.
In January 2008, I commenced my public appointment at the Noarlunga hospital and Kangaroo island Hospital, where I provide general urology consultative and operative services to the Southern Regions of Adelaide.
In February 2008, I was appointed consultant urologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital to commence operating on the daVinci Robot performing the Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and am one of three urologists who perform this type of surgery in Adelaide.
