James graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1978 He did his residency at the Wollongong and Bulli Hospitals for four years before joining Dr Roy Hsu in general practice at 328 Crown Street, Wollongong. Whilst in private practice, he continued to work part-time in the Emergency Department of the Wollongong Hospital for 10 yrs from 1983 to 1993. His interests, other than the practice and teaching of medicine, are fishing, skiing and motorcycling.
