Professor Weerasooriya is a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist (heart rhythm specialist). Rukshen graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1994 and completed general cardiology training at Royal Perth Hospital in 2001 before completing 2 years training overseas at the world’s leading centre for AF ablation – the Hospital Cardiologique du Haut Leveque in Bordeaux. AF ablation was pioneered and subsequently developed for mainstream application by the cardiac electrophysiologists in Bordeaux.
Rukshen specialises in the management of heart rhythm disturbances and has a private practice with rooms in Nedlands, Mandurah and Joondalup. Rukshen's practice encompasses all aspects of cardiac rhythm management including ablation procedures, insertion of devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators and the related follow-up of patients with heart rhythm disturbances and implanted devices such as pacemakers. Rukshen works with a dedicated team at the AF ablation clinic and is also a longstanding member of the CVS team. Rukshen is supported by Mr Simon Gillett (Clinical Nurse Practitioner) and a dedicated team of cardiac technicians, anesthetists and reception staff. The AFAC can provide tailored cardiac rehabilitation (in collaboration with WA Cardiac Rehabilitation) as well as, host a patient support group for AF patients with regular meetings throughout the year.
In addition to his clinical work, Rukshen is active in teaching and research in association with the University of WA, Harry Perkins Institute and Edith Cowan University.
