Katie Martin is a Clinical Psychologist Registrar with a Bachelor of Arts from Arizona State University, a Bachelor of Psychology (1st class Honours) from Curtin University and a Master of Psychology (Clinical) from Curtin University. Katie has experience working with adults, adolescents, and children with a range of presenting problems. Katie adheres to evidence-based therapy practices and endeavours to work collaboratively with clients to empower them and promote well-being. Her main aim is to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with her clients based on a foundation of support, trust and understanding.

While at the Curtin University (Child) Psychology Clinic she worked with young people between the ages of five and 17 alongside their families. She provided individual and group evidence-based therapy (e.g., cognitive behaviour therapy, exposure response prevention, and meta-cognitive therapy) sessions for children with autism spectrum disorder, emotion dysregulation, generalised anxiety disorder, OCD, major depressive disorder, and specific phobias.

During her time at YouthLink (i.e., public mental health) she was not only a clinical psychologist trainee but also filled the role of case manager. Her clients presented with complex psychosocial issues and comorbid psychological disorders, including a history of abuse and/or neglect. As such, trauma-focussed cognitive behaviour therapy and interpersonal process approaches were adopted.

At Royal Perth Hospital in the State Trauma Unit she provided psychosocial support and brief intervention strategies to manage acute stress reaction and other psychological distress associated with her clients’ mechanism of injury (e.g., ACT techniques). She worked with patients diagnosed with PTSD and/or (comorbid) major depressive disorder and adopted trauma-focused CBT and behaviour activation strategies. She also has experience co-facilitating group dialectical behaviour therapy sessions on the 2K psychiatric ward in the hospital.

Katie recently conducted a randomised-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a universal prevention program for primary school children which aimed to enhance social-emotional competence through fun and inclusive group learning. She is currently in the process of having the findings published in a peer-reviewed journal, and has had research findings published in a peer-reviewed journal previously.

Katie is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association and the Australian Association for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. She is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Psychology Board of Australia. She is a registered Medicare provider.
