Karen Spence is a clinical psychologist with experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. She believes in helping her clients to discover their own path through the emotional difficulties they may be facing, and providing an authentic and safe space for her clients to do so without judgement.
Karen holds a bachelor of Science (Psychology) with Honours and a Masters in Clinical Psychology, both from Macquarie University. She is fully endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA) and is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA). She has experience working as a psychologist across a range of settings, including university research centres, public community-based mental health services and inpatient mental health units. Karen is also a lecturer at the Australian Catholic University in the Masters of Clinical Psychology Program.
Karen has particular experience working with young adults experiencing a first episode of psychosis and/or mood disorders, and currently works at St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst in their Early Intervention Psychosis team. She is also currently involved in running the hospital's Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) program for adults struggling with self-harm, suicidal thoughts, relationship difficulties, substance use and other addictions.
Karen also has experience treating complex presentations of anxiety and depression across the lifespan, working with older adults at the Centre for Emotional Health at Macquarie University and adults in the Community Mental Health Service at St Vincent's Hospital. She uses a range of therapeutic modalities including CBT, ACT, DBT and Schema Therapy, depending on each individual client's presentation and goals for therapy.
