Karen Michael is a Specialist Psychologist endorsed by the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA) as a Counselling Psychologist, with endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist expected to be confirmed by 2012. Karen’s expertise is drawn from 12 years experience in both public and private sectors of mental health, working with children, adults, and couples. Karen specialises in Anxiety Disorders (including trauma), Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, and Adult Relationships. Karen also has strong experience working with eating disorders and substance abuse/misuse, poor self-esteem/confidence, weight management, parent-child difficulties, and pain management and WorkCover. Karen has worked extensively in the area of sexual health (sexuality, sexual identity) and intimacy within adult relationships, as well as studying the relationship between physical/medical health and psychological health. Karen has significant experience working very closely with medical practitioners, including psychiatrists, and aims to maintain this close liaison with professionals throughout the course of treatment for all patients. Furthermore, along with evidence-based practices such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical-Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Interpersonal Psycho-Therapy (IPT), Karen has trained in, and practices, psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches to adult mental health/illness, extending to patients a combined approach of implementing longer-term solutions to managing symptoms by exploring and bringing greater insight into longer-standing patterns of behaviour, as well as maintaining factors and triggers. Karen aims to tailor the psychological course of treatment to suit each patient’s presenting problem and personality/character. Each patient is carefully guided through a roadmap of sessions, detailing personal experiences, and improving insight/understanding of one’s own obstacles to achieving good, strong mental health for the long-term.
