Deepa has worked as both a clinical and research psychologist, and is keenly interested in human functioning. Deepa reads widely to inform her clinical practice, and works to form a thorough and accurate understanding of each person’s psychological needs.
Deepa has experience in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of psychological conditions, including depression and mood difficulties, anxiety, adjustment to chronic health and life changes, and longstanding self-defeating behavioural patterns. She also has an interest in working with people experiencing relationship problems, confidence and self-esteem difficulties, stress, work-related stress, grief, substance-abuse problems and the psychological management of chronic pain.
Over several years prior to working in private practice, Deepa has worked in outpatient psychology clinics in public and private hospitals, and in community mental health centres. In these settings Deepa has conducted individual and group treatment programs for anxiety and depression, and the cognitive and behavioural treatment of depression amongst patients with chronic health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Deepa has a keen interest in working with people who find themselves stuck in, and repeating, longstanding patterns that are unhelpful and destructive, and that prevent them from living the type of life they value. To this end she has an interest in and has sought specialist training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
An additional area of research and clinical interest for Deepa has been psychological aspects of cancer. Research towards her PhD investigated a new approach to screening for depression and anxiety disorders amongst patients with cancer and she has worked on a large multisite research project that investigated the role of psychosocial factors, including stressful life events, in the development of breast cancer. Clinically, at a hospital-based Cancer Therapy Centre Deepa provided assessment and treatment of inpatients and outpatients with cancer, in consultation with medical and allied health team. Deepa also facilitated the development of a clinical psychology service within the Centre.
Deepa has tutored undergraduate psychology students at university and has presented her PhD research at national and international conferences.
Deepa works collaboratively with her clients with an empathetic and caring attitude. She is a highly dedicated professional who ensures continuing professional development and keeps up-to-date with evidence-based practice to better assist her clients.
