Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Kristie has substantial working experience with clients who have had traumatic experiences and who may meet a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Trauma may include car accidents, sexual or physical assault, loss of a loved one, workplace or school bullying and natural disasters. PTSD is most often comorbid with anxiety or depression, and relationship difficulties are common. Some common symptoms may include re experiencing the trauma through nightmares, flashbacks or intrusive thoughts, increased anxiety and avoidance of situations which trigger post traumatic memories, and low mood, agitation and anger outbursts can be commonplace. Kristie works with the patient to overcome the trauma whilst addressing the comorbid condition and addressing the areas of difficulty in the client’s life.
Anxiety Disorders
Kristie has special interest in treating anxiety disorders. Anxiety is an intense emotional reaction which causes significant fear and distress. A consequence of anxiety is avoiding people and places which once were pleasurable experiences. Anxiety can be debilitating and Kristie works with the client to overcome the cognitive, emotional and behavioural issues through identification of specific triggers and addressing avoidance behaviours. Kristie utilises evidence based interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which addresses catastrophic thinking, how to manage the emotional and physiological symptoms of distress and how to address avoidance behaviours. Kristie finds this treatment regime effective in reducing anxiety symptoms.
Relationship Issues
Kristie also has specific interest in relationship issues. How we think and behave interpersonally can affect how we engage in relationships and how other people engage with you. Have you found yourself wondering why you are attracting the same type of person? Or why the end result is always the same? Kristie utilises Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Schema based approaches to assist the individual to identify their past and present relationship patterns. Once identified Kristie can assist the client to change the way they relate to others to have happier, healthier and longer lasting relationships.
Work Related Injuries
Kristie has extensive experience working with individuals who have sustained a work related injury. Kristie has worked with individuals from a diverse range of occupations and has treated individuals with both physical and mental health issues. Kristie has worked with individuals with burnout, work related stress, bullying, and consequent anxiety and depressive symptoms. Additionally Kristie has worked with workers who have had a range of physical injuries and illnesses such as backs, shoulders and knee injuries, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and chronic pain issues. Kristie works from a mutli-disciplinary framework with other treating parties, employers and Workcover, to assist the individual to return to work in their pre injury capacity. Kristie draws on clinical and health psychology models of treatment including a bio-psychosocial model of treatment. Kristie has good working knowledge of how the workplace can assist the worker to modify the work duties or environment and graduate the return to work process, to overcome the mental and/or physical condition.
