Mr John McQuillen (Psychologist)

John has 5 years of experience working as a Psychologist in both the public and private sectors. He has worked with a diverse range of people including refugees who have experienced torture and/or trauma, people with difficulties related to chronic pain from medical problems, and people who have been marginalized due to their race, ethnicity, culture, or disabilities. Coming from a family with a military background he has an understanding of Defence Force culture, and the unique challenges faced by its members and their families. He has also worked in a correctional centre as a Psychologist and has experience working with both offenders and victims of crime and their families. John has experience working with a diverse range of mental health problems including problems with mood and anxiety, the effects of trauma, substance use problems, grief and loss, specific phobias, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, self-harm and suicidal behaviours, stress and adjustment problems, difficulties with relationships, and anger management to name a few. John provides individualized therapy for these difficulties based on scientifically validated research and techniques. He primarily uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). He is eclectic in his approach and tailors therapy to be a meaningful and engaging process for the individual designed to meet their unique mental health needs and life goals. He is a warm, enthusiastic, and practical therapist who recognizes the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the strengths a client brings to the process. In addition to providing therapy, John is able to provide a psychological assessment and reporting service for medico-legal, forensic,(eg: mitigation reports) and other purposes. John has a particular interest in working with persons who have experienced trauma in their lives and the role of personality traits in mental health problems.
