Jesse has over 3 years of experience of psychological practice including working in general community services, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital services, specialist mental health services for Aboriginal young people and their families (led by Aboriginal clinicians), and psycho-oncology services for cancer patients/survivors and their families. He is also an early career neuroscientist and has worked as a casual academic at the University of Newcastle teaching undergraduate psychology students.

Jesse believes that a good psychologist is like a gardener not a carpenter, they don’t “fix” clients but help them to grow and flourish. Like each garden differs in their make-up of soils, plants, and environmental conditions, each client has their own unique biology (brain/body), psychology (emotional/ behavioural/ thinking patterns), and social-cultural environment (family/friends, work/school, spirituality, local community etc.). Only the client has lived and experienced these unique factors and therefore only the client is an expert on their self. Jesse’s expertise in psychology and neuroscience is purposed to help the client become a healthier and more thriving version of their self.

Jesse has experience and training in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and suicide prevention and management. He also has considerable experience in the practice and teachings of mindfulness and draws extensively on psychodynamic and existential –humanistic theory. Jesse practices the therapy models he believes are best supported by up-to-date science. He believes these therapies usually share the same active ingredients and often integrates them to best suit the client and their situation.

Jesse completed a Bachelor of Psychology (1st Class Honours) at the University of Newcastle in 2013. In late 2014 he accepted an Australian Postgraduate Award to undertake a PhD in Clinical Psychology. He is currently completing his doctoral research thesis but was awarded Masters of Clinical Psychology equivalency in 2017, and began his Clinical Psychology Registrar Program in 2018 – which will be completed mid-2019, giving the title of Clinical Psychologist.

During his postgraduate studies Jesse received the Ros Gribble Prize for Excellence in Clinical Psychology (awarded for highest performance in the first year of the Clinical Psychology Program), Faculty High Commendation for Collaborative Excellence as part of the Equity and Diversity Psychology Working Party, the APS POPIG Psychoanalytic Essay Prize for a paper linking the neuroscience of play with psychoanalytic theory and mindfulness teachings for therapy practice, as well as several research awards. As an undergraduate he received a Faculty Medal and several other awards for academic excellence.
