I am by nature a curious person, and this curiosity has been people-oriented for as long as I can remember – a sense of fascination with other’s experiences, words and behaviours; wanting to comprehend, and feeling drawn to empathically help. The human condition is so shared and yet so individual, and it is this beautiful uniqueness within the ‘sameness’ that I find most captivating. I also keenly understand the value of a genuine warmth and care from others in life’s toughest moments, and feel grateful that I can be part of that for clients. It’s this fascination and awareness that’s informed my now 20 years of experience in the field of Psychology, initially as a psychometrist and counsellor, and later specialising in Clinical Psychology. My point of departure is always to let what I come to understand and appreciate about the person in front of me, in terms of their individual needs, guide me in finding the right approach in working with them towards their own goals of healing or change. I hold the belief that within everyone lies immeasurable gifts of personal power, resilience and the capacity for self-direction and autonomy, and my journey with clients is focused in connecting with those gifts and the associated hope and meaning it brings. In terms of therapeutic frames, my preferences are to use psychodynamic therapeutic approaches, along with CBT, supportive therapy, mindfulness practices and hypnotherapy.
Prior to immigrating to Australia in 2013, I did my pre-graduate training as well as Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology through the University of Pretoria in South Africa, and over the years have worked in various settings, including higher education, a psychiatric hospital environment, the public hospital sector, and most recently over the last 3 and a half years, in private practice. I see clients from ages 16 and older, and this may include couples. My interests include, but are not limited to working with:
Depression and other mood spectrum presentations Anxiety presentations Bereavement and loss Interpersonal / relational dynamics Self-psychology PTSD Stress LGBTIQ matters Abuse Adjustment and life transitions Self-esteem and assertiveness
