Dr Peter Hamer is a highly qualified upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon with specialist training in advanced laparoscopy (key-hole surgery) including weight loss surgery (sleeve gastrectomy and bypass), hiatus hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery and inguinal hernia surgery.
After being awarded a Fellowship of General Surgery through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Hamer gained additional training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland; Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand; and Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia. He completed the Australia and New Zealand Gastro Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA) training program in addition to his general surgical training.
Dr Hamer is a GESA accredited endoscopist and colonoscopist. He is involved in the teaching and examination of medical students at Newcastle University. He supervises general surgical trainees through the Hunter/Central Coast Training network at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals. He is widely published and has been awarded a Masters of Philosophy (Surgery) from Adelaide University for his work into achalasia and other swallowing problems related to the oesophagus. He has published in international journals as well as written books chapters for surgical textbooks. Dr Hamer peer reviews articles for the ANZ Journal of Surgery, and cases for CHASM (Collaborating Hospitals Audit of Surgical Mortality).
