Dr Kush Shrestha is an Orthopaedic Surgeon experienced in all aspects of General Orthopaedics and Trauma, including hip, knee and shoulder surgery, joint replacement surgery and sports injuries. He has special interest in primary and revision arthroplasty of hips and knees. He also has special interest in sports surgery of knee and shoulder. He currently serves as a Deputy Director of Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma at Royal Darwin Hospital. He is also a Visiting Medical Officer at Darwin Private Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital, Modbury Hospital, Ashford Hospital and Memorial Hospital.
Dr Shrestha graduated from The University of Adelaide in 1999 and travelled to UK to complete his Basic Surgical Training in 2003. He then returned to Australia to complete his Orthopaedic Surgical Training in 2013. He gained specialist experience in hip and knee arthroplasty surgery by completing international fellowship titled ‘Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship’ at University of Western Ontario, Canada. He gained additional expertise in Sports Surgery by completing world renowned fellowship titled ‘Adult Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship’ at the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, Canada. He has also visited several centres in US including Hospital for Special Surgery.
Dr Shrestha has also gained valuable experience in research by presenting at several national and international meetings and conferences. Most recently his paper was presented at the 2015 Canadian Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting on research on ‘Comparison of backside wear in smooth versus polished base plate in total knee replacements.’ This paper has also been published in ‘Journal of Arthroplasty in June 2015. In addition Dr Shrestha has published a book chapter in world renowned book called ‘Mater Techniques in Hip’ titled ‘DDH and Surgical Management.’
Dr Shrestha is actively involved in teaching as well. He currently serves as a ‘Director of Training’ for Australian Orthopaedic Association where he supervises current Orthopaedic Trainees. He also has 6 registrars, 3 RMOS and number of medical students under his supervision. He is also a principal supervisor of AOA accredited international Trauma and Arthroplasty Fellowship training program.
Notably, Dr Shrestha is actively involved in humanitarian medical missions. He has provided post earthquake disaster management at the Tribhuvan University Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, and performed Orthopaedic operations in Antigua, Guatemala as part of ‘Operation Walk’ Canada. He also led a multidisciplinary Australian medical team to Nepal in 2018 to conduct an International Hip/Knee arthroplasty symposium. Around 40 orthopaedic surgeons and 30 nurses were trained in upskilling their skills. He has established not for profit AussieMed Foundation now to support these humanitarian medical missions.
Dr Shrestha also maintains ‘Continuing Professional Development’ and has attended a number of seminars and courses. He is up to date with AOA CPD program. He is also a chairman of ‘Patient review committee’ in Darwin Private Hospital which reviews all the morbidity and mortality cases of the hospital. He also represents Orthopaedic Surgery in “Medical Advisory Committee’ in Darwin Private Hospital which deals with medial credentialing and quality maintenance.
