Dr Julie Buchanan is passionate about women’s health and wellbeing. She offers obstetric services from pre-conception advice through to pregnancy and delivery, as well as the management of gynaecological problems such as menstrual irregularities, abnormal pap smears, pelvic pain, prolapse, incontinence and menopause.

Julie has a special interest in the complex and potentially changing journey of pregnancy and delivery as well as the sensitive nature of gynaecological problems. She places emphasis on communicating clearly and compassionately so that women feel confident with her advice.

Many women experience changes in their lifetime and Julie truly understands this. As a mother to three primary and high school aged children, she well remembers the pregnancy journey and the uncertainty that can occur. It is important to her to foster a relationship with women, focusing on being by their side throughout their pregnancy so that if complications arise they know and trust their issues will be dealt with appropriately and sensitively.

Julie has trained at obstetric tertiary facilities and is well placed to look after women with twins, vaginal birth after caesarean section, pre-term deliveries and medical problems associated with pregnancy. She delivers at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital and The Wesley Hospital.

During her training Julie was fortunate to train under various gynaecology subspecialists obtaining skills including minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery to treat endometriosis, fibroids and perform hysterectomies as well as vaginal surgery including hysterectomy and prolapse repairs. She performs minor surgery for heavy menstrual bleeding such as endometrial ablation and insertion of IUD (Mirena). She is also an experienced Colposcopist and is able to treat confirmed abnormal cervical screening tests (formally known as pap smear) with a LLETZ procedure.

Julie feels it is important to keep up to date by attending conferences and teaching junior doctors and medical students. She is a member of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery Society and The Australian and New Zealand Vulvovaginal Society. She helped set up the University of Queensland clinical program in Ipswich and plays an important role in maintaining the education of medical students both at University sites and within the hospital settings.
