Dr Tan graduated from the University of Melbourne and pursued his passion in Interventional Endoscopy at Alfred Hospital Melbourne for two years before embarking on a one-year overseas interventional endoscopy fellowship in a renowned liver transplant centre in Vancouver Canada.
Since this return, Jonathan currently holds a public appointment at the Box Hill and Northern Hospital as one of the senior visiting medical staff. He is actively involved in research where he has presented his work at various local and international conferences. Teaching and training gastroenterology trainees is one of his greatest passions. Jonathan maintains a broad range of interest in all aspects of gastroenterology with special interests in pancreas-biliary related diseases and colorectal cancer prevention including performing colonoscopies for patients with positive stool tests from the National bowel cancer screening program.
Removal of large colonic polyps in a minimalistic bowel preserving approach whenever possible is one of the many advanced endoscopy techniques that Dr Jonathan Tan is adept in performing. Other procedures that Dr Jonathan Tan is well verse in include Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for eg. removal of common bile duct stones, Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for examining the pancreas and Double balloon enteroscopy for interrogating the small bowel.
Above all, providing holistic patient centered care, with good communication to various health professions is a core value that Jonathan holds.
