Dr. Clair Lawson, is a Clinical Psychologist with over 11 years experience providing psychological assessment and therapy. Clair completed her Master of Psychology (Clinical) and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Western Australia in 2002. Her research examined the cognitive factors that contribute to the development and maintenance of depression in adults. She has published papers and presented her research at international conferences.
Clair began her career as a clinical psychologist working in outpatient and hospital settings with young people and their families. She worked with a range of complex mental health difficulties and provided individual and family therapy. During this time, Clair was responsible for developing and implementing a group therapy program aimed at reducing adolescent self-harm and suicidal behaviour. She was also the Clinical Psychologist in charge of an outpatient program which was designed to assist children who were experiencing difficulties participating in the normal school environment due to anxiety or depression.
In 2006, Clair established her own private practice to provide psychological services to children, adolescents and adults experiencing mild through to severe mental health concerns. Clair has specific interest and expertise in the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, and emotion regulation difficulties including self-harm.
She adopts a range of evidence based treatment approaches in her therapeutic work including cognitive behaviour therapy, schema therapy, metacognitive therapy, solution focused therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. The type of therapy used in each case is tailored to the person’s individual needs and concerns. Clair draws on her experience in child and adolescent mental health to inform her understanding of how early childhood experiences influence the development and maintenance of emotional difficulties and relationship problems in adulthood.
Clair provides clinical supervision to provisional psychologists and clinical psychology registrars within her private practice. She also provides teaching and supervision to clinical psychology trainees within the Master of Clinical Psychology program at Curtin University. She is an approved supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia.
Clair is registered with the Psychology Board of Australia; she is a Full Member of the Australian Psychological Society and College of Clinical Psychologists; and is a member of the Australian Association of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. She is a registered provider with Medicare Australia and most private health insurers.
