Dr. Bu O’Brien is a highly experienced breast physician with surgical specialisation in obstetrics and gynaecology and is part of the multi-disciplinary team at the SouthWest Breast Clinic and SouthWest Surgery WA.

Born in Malaysia, of Sri Lankan descent, Dr. O’Brien completed her primary school education, later finishing her secondary education in Cheltenham, England. On completion of her secondary education, Dr. O’Brien studied Medicine in Dublin at the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland.

Her junior postings were undertaken in various hospitals in Scotland, gaining her Diplomas in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Child Health. Following her time in Scotland, she then worked in Birmingham, England as a general practice registrar, passing her membership exam to the Royal College of General Practice in 2007.

Emigrating to Bunbury with her young family in 2008 to work as a G.P, she later received an opportunity to work as a breast physician for Breastscreen WA in their first Bunbury breast assessment clinic between 2013 to 2017.

Since moving to the region, Dr. O’Brien is a valued member of the Western Australian medical community, with past positions including Director and Chairperson of Koombana Health Network, Director and Practice Principal of Bunbury Medical Services, mentor to John Flynn Medical students and examiner with the Rural Clinic of Clinical Medicine.

Sharing her experience within the community is an essential focus for Dr. O’Brien, who currently serves on the Clinical Reference Group for Headspace Bunbury while maintaining membership with the South West Cancer Strategic Team in Bunbury.

Reading, walking, yoga, cooking and travelling to new places are among some of Dr. Bu’s leisure activities, along with spending quality family time with her three children. Socialising with valued friends, both here and overseas, is a constant reminder to her that life is also about living, loving and laughing.

“Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.”
