Dr Teng was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania School of Medicine and Consultant Paediatric Sleep Physician at the Launceston General Hospital in 2012. His clinical and research interests include the neuropsychological impact of sleep disorders in children, parasomnias, infant obstructive sleep apnoea and childhood narcolepsy. He is a Council Member of the Asia-Pacific Paediatric Sleep Association (APSSA; See http://www.appsasleep.org/)
Dr Teng was Respiratory Fellow and Chief Resident Medical Officer at the then Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital before he completed training under Professor Colin Sullivan of the University of Sydney. Professor Sullivan is a world authority in sleep and respiratory physiology in infants and adults. He invented CPAP in the early 1980’s and has trained generations of adult and paediatric physicians practicing in centres around the world in sleep and respiratory medicine.
The Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) Department of Sleep Medicine began operations using full overnight Polysomnography (PSG or “Sleep Studies”) in 1995. It is one of only a few state of the art facilities in the world solely dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in infants and children, functioning as an independent medical department of its own. It receives extensive referrals from all subspecialties within a tertiary referral hospital, located on the largest teaching hospital campus in the Southern Hemisphere. The 4-bed, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory is one of the leading paediatric sleep centres in the Asia-Pacific Region. Over 700 studies are conducted per year. The Department has trained many specialists who now lead their fields around the world.
