Dr Alberta Hoi is the principal rheumatologist at Eastern Rheumatology. Graduating from The University of Melbourne in 1996, Dr Alberta Hoi undertook her internal medicine and rheumatology training at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre, and Monash Medical Centre. She spent a year at the Early Arthritis Clinic at Royal Adelaide Hospital before returning to Melbourne in 2008.
Her clinical interests include a range of systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In 2010, she completed her PhD (Monash University, Department of Medicine), examining the immunological disease processes of lupus, in particular a proinflammatory cytokine called MIF. Outside rheumatology, Alberta has maintained an interest across the breadth of general medicine, and continued to be holistic in her approach in managing her patients.
Currently Dr Alberta Hoi holds clinical and academic appointments at Monash Medical Centre and Monash University, as well as the Austin Hospital. She heads the Monash Lupus Clinic, and is the senior clinician at the Austin Autoimmune Clinic. Her research interests include the development of the Australian Lupus Registry, the use of biomarkers and disease profile in predicting outcomes in SLE patients. Dr Hoi is a steering member of Australian Rheumatology Association SLE Special Interest Group and is part of the Asia-Pacific Lupus Working Group. She has an ongoing role in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching.
Alberta speaks fluent Cantonese and has a working knowledge of Mandarin. At times when Alberta is not busy with patient care, research, and teaching, she entertains her two boys at home.
