Dr Aroney is a founding member of Queensland Cardiology. He graduated in medicine from the University of Queensland in 1979 and completed his cardiology training at Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside. Having gained a Heart Foundation Scholarship he worked as a clinical and research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, returning to Brisbane in 1989.

Dr Aroney served as Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Prince Charles Hospital from 1990-2005, where he founded the first comprehensive Chest Pain Assessment unit in Queensland.

In 1991 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Queensland for research in heart failure. He has served on numerous local and national committees including Chairman of the National Clinical Issues Committee of the Heart Foundation and a member of the Scientific Committee of the CSANZ. He has authored over 150 research papers, abstracts and book chapters and has continuing interest in clinical practice guidelines, clinical research and quality assessment programs in Cardiology.

In 2007 Dr Aroney was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to Cardiology and the Heart Foundation.

Currently Dr Aroney is the Director of Cardiology at Holy Spirit Northside Hospital, Chermside. He specializes in interventional cardiology with particular interests in coronary heart disease and the percutaneous treatment of structural heart disease (mitral balloon valvuloplasty, ASD closure, septal ablation and percutaneous aortic valve implantation).
