Professor Williams Parsonage is a Director of Queensland Cardiovascular Group and Senior Staff Cardiologist at The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. His clinical interests are in general cardiology, cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography), and the investigation and management of heart disease in pregnancy.
Prof Parsonage is a graduate of the University of Nottingham Medical School in the UK, where he commenced cardiology training, and also undertook a clinical research Fellowship. During this time, he was awarded the postgraduate degree of Doctor of Medicine for research work in patients with chronic heart failure. He moved to Australia in 2000 to complete cardiology training at The Prince Charles Hospital, and also completed clinical Fellowships in the Queensland Heart Failure and Transplant Unit and the echocardiography department. At The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Prof Parsonage was instrumental in establishing a dedicated multidisciplinary clinic for the management of heart disease in pregnancy; the first clinic of its kind in Australia.
In addition to clinical practice, Prof Parsonage maintains an active research program that is helping to establish faster, more reliable and safer ways of investigating patients who present to hospital with chest pain. He has published numerous original research papers in this area, and has presented work at scientific meetings in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the USA. He is a Clinical Director for the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation, QUT.
Prof Parsonage is an active Member of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, having been Chairman (2008-11) and Secretary (2005-08) of the Queensland branch, Chairman of the convening committee for the annual scientific meeting of the society held in Brisbane in 2012, and is currently a Member of the society's Professional Ethics and Standards Committee since 2014.
