Professor Ian Spark undertook his undergraduate medical training at Leeds University, UK. His general and vascular surgical training continued in Leeds, North America and Australia. Professor Spark obtained research experience as part of his MD thesis titled “understanding and modification of ischaemia reperfusion injury”, and his ongoing commitment is illustrated by a large number of presentations at International and National meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals. He started as Professor of Vascular Surgery at Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University in 2008, and works as a vascular and endovascular surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre, Flinders Private Hospital and Glenelg day hospital. In addition to providing a high quality clinical service his principal aspiration is to improve management of peripheral vascular diseases, for which he has gained external grant support from the NIH, Heart Foundation, and Veteran affairs foundation. His research involves both basic science, in collaboration with SAHMRI, Flinders Cancer Centre, Biomedical Science and clinical research. He is currently supervising four PhD candidates and three MD students. He is involved and principle investigator on several multi-centre trials including SHIELD, In-Pact Global, Illuminate Global, Illuminate ISR and Illuminate BTK. All of these have focused on saving limbs through the use of new devices and stents. He is also in involved and published results from the GREAT registry and Engage registry which focus on examining the durability and cost effectiveness of stent graft repair of aortic aneurysms. He is currently running a prospective trial using IVUS (intra vascular ultrasound) to determine if endovascular procedures can be improved with information about the inside of the blood vessels. His clinical interests encompass the full range of vascular and endovascular surgery, with special interest in complex aortic aneurysms, carotid disease, thoracic outlet syndrome and the management of peripheral arterial disease and diabetic foot problems. Professor Spark was the first clinician to introduce different endovenous treatments into Australia for the management of varicose veins.
