Tony Cunningham, AO, MBBS, MD, is Executive Director of the Westmead Millennium Institute (at Westmead Hospital) and of its Centre for Virus Research. He is Professor of Research Medicine and Sub-Dean (Research) at the Western Clinical School at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia. He is also Director of the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology Research, directly funded by the Australian Department of Health and Ageing.He trained in infectious diseases, clinical virology and virology research at the University of Melbourne and as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. His major research interests are in HIV and Herpes simplex virus biology and immunology, especially in relation to the development of vaccines and microbicides.He has also published numerous original and review articles on epidemiology, antiviral therapy and vaccines for Herpes simplex and varicella/zoster viruses, has participated in numerous international roundtables and often consults for global pharma on these topics.He has published more than 250 primary refereed scientific articles and 60 invited reviews or chapters in various journals or books, edited 3 books and has been cited more than 7,500 times.
