Sandhya has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and families in both educational and clinical settings. She adopts a person-centred approach to counselling, which means that the client is at the centre of decisions which relate to their life. Sandhya aims to provide a non-judgemental space in which the client feels safe to share their concerns and ultimately empowered to lead their life in the direction they want to take it. She works collaboratively with the client by listening, thinking together, coaching, sharing ideas and seeking feedback. Having a background in Educational and Developmental Psychology, Sandhya is interested in life transitions (such as kinder to school, primary to high school, high school to work /university), educational progress, or difficulties at kinder and school. She uses a Social Thinking® framework to address social skill deficits where she teaches a child to think about the impact of his or her behaviour in different situations thereby empowering the child to be in charge of their decisions. Sandhya is trained in a variety of theoretical approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. Therapy may include one or a selection of the above approaches, as intervention is tailored according to the presenting issue as well as the individual’s strengths and values. Outside of work, Sandhya enjoys long walks to get coffee, spending time with her family and friends, too much lasagne for one person and dressing up her dog in ridiculous outfits, particularly at Christmastime.
