Occupational Therapy for children is about helping them learn, play and participate. Some young people may need help to develop strategies so they can perform the activities they need and want to do, particularly if they are experiencing developmental delays or have conditions such as ADHD or autism spectrum disorder. Kate Horstmann is an Occupational Therapist providing services in rooms at Greenslopes Private Hospital through Greenslopes Paediatrics. She helps children and families who want practical strategies and support in the following areas: Daily life skills (toileting, feeding, dressing) Organisational skills (doing homework, getting ready in the morning) Attention skills and physically settling Participating at school and in different community settings (after school care, clubs) Play and social skills Motor skills (ball skills, handwriting) Transition into prep and high school. Kate works across all areas of a child’s life and helps generate practical strategies to build the skills of the young person and their family. Her focus is on creating a good fit between the child, their activities and the environment. This means that strategies are always tailored to the individual and are across multiple domains, including physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. Some strategies include problem solving with families and schools on how to make practical and real changes at home and school. Kate works with children from as young as two years old up until age 18. Whilst early intervention is important and effective, Kate is also committed to providing specialist support for older children and adolescents. Ultimately, Kate gets most satisfaction from collaborating with others to increase a young person’s confidence, participation and fun. Kate has over 16 years of experience working with children, families and schools both in Australia and the UK. She has specialist skills in the area of autism, ADHD, trauma, attachment and complex behavioural needs. She co-authored the book Helping Kids and Teens with ADHD in School, which is distributed internationally. Outside of work Kate enjoys being social and active and likes anything that involves being near the river or ocean.
