Dr Owen Lello (BA Psych, MSc, DClinPsy) is a Registered Psychologist who is endorsed in the area of Clinical Psychology.
Owen has a warm, empathetic style and believes that a strong therapeutic relationship forms the basis of all successful therapies. He has expertise in treating adults and adolescents with a variety of clinical presentations, including anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, bipolar disorder and personality disorders. Owen has a particular interest in treating complex trauma and Borderline Personality Disorder using a particular form of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy called the Conversational Model.
Owen also uses a variety of other treatment approaches depending on client’s preferences and what is clinically indicated. These include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness based techniques.
Owen has completed a Doctor of Clinical Psychology, writing his doctoral research thesis on the effect of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills on suicidality in people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Owen undertook his training in a variety of clinical settings, including the Centre for Psychotherapy in Newcastle, which specialises in treating Borderline Personality Disorder and eating disorders, a forensic psychiatric hospital, as well as in both adult and child and adolescent community mental health teams.
Following his training, Owen worked in a number of adult community mental health teams with clients diagnosed with a wide range of complex and severe mental health difficulties. He has also worked in a mental health intensive care unit, which is predominantly for people suffering from severe acute psychotic illnesses, a medical rehabilitation ward, assisting people with the psychological difficulties associated with physical recovery, and a private practice in Sydney where he saw clients suffering from a range of mental health diagnoses.
