Dr Kevin Woods is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and knee surgery. He trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in Australia and internationally, and since 1989 has worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Canberra, the city of his childhood. Dr Woods completed his medical degree (Hons) at the University of NSW in 1979 and, following orthopaedic training in Newcastle NSW, was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 1986. He gained further experience in London working as senior registrar in orthopaedic surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In 1988 he was awarded the AM Taylor Travelling Fellowship by the Australian Orthopaedic Association; this took him on a study trip to London, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Sheffield and Tours in France. In 1990 he was admitted as a fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and he has been elected to membership of both the Australian Knee Society, and the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia. Dr Woods has been in private practice in Canberra for 25 years and also consults to the Canberra, Calvary, National Capital and Calvary John James hospitals and the Canberra Specialist Surgical Centre. He is the current Senior Examiner Orthopaedics for the RACS. In this role Dr Woods heads a team of fellow examiners responsible for assessing the knowledge, clinical skills, decision making and professional competencies of all Australian and New Zealand doctors who are training to become orthopaedic surgeons. Dr Woods has been a lecturer for the Post-graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine at the Australian Institute of Sports and instructor for the RACS Early Management of Severe Trauma course. He has an ongoing interest in teaching and training junior surgeons and has presented at many regional, national and international conferences and published a number of scientific papers. As a committed sportsman with particular interest in cycling, skiing and fly-fishing, Dr Woods has an understanding of, and interest in, restoring people to healthy and active lives.
