He trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in Australia and internationally, and since 1989 has worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Canberra, the city of his childhood. Dr Woods completed his medical degree (Hons) at the University of NSW in 1979 and, following orthopaedic training in Newcastle NSW, was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 1986. He gained further experience in London working as senior registrar in orthopaedic surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Dr Woods has been a lecturer for the Post-graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine at the Australian Institute of Sports and instructor for the RACS Early Management of Severe Trauma course. He has an ongoing interest in teaching and training junior surgeons and has presented at many regional, national and international conferences and published a number of scientific papers.
