Gastroenteritis
Gastroenteritis or infectious diarrhea is a medical condition characterized by inflammation (-itis) of the gastrointestinal tract that involves both the stomach (gastro-) and the small intestine (entero-) resulting in some combination of diarrhea vomiting and abdominal pain and cramping. Dehydration may occur as a result. Gastroenteritis has been referred to as gastro stomach bug and stomach virus.
Gastroenteritis is usually a self-limiting disease needs no investigation or treatment. Rehydration and maintaining oral intake is the main corner stone of management. However, in some cases such as typhoid fever or rotavoirus infection blood tests, urine test or stool sample should be performed for diagnosis and treatment, infection control and also public health benefit. The mode of transmission is touching an infected material including surface.
