Mr Yi Yuen (Ian) Wang is a fully qualified Neurosurgeon specialising in Minimally Invasive Techniques for all neurosurgical conditions. He has a special interest in pituitary and spinal disorders and is one of few neurosurgeons in Melbourne who has undertaken an extended overseas Fellowship training in endoscopic pituitary approaches and minimally invasive spinal surgery. Mr Wang utilises the O-arm intra-operative navigation system for minimally invasive spinal surgery, increasing the safety and accuracy of complex spinal reconstructive surgery. Mr Wang studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 1999. He completed a Post Graduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy whilst working as a surgical resident at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne and entered neurosurgical training in 2004. Considerable neurosurgical experience was gained throughout Victoria, with training undertaken at the Alfred Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, the Royal Children’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne). Mr Wang completed his neurosurgical training in 2009. Further specialist training was undertaken with a Minimally Invasive Fellowship under the supervision of Mr Kanna Gnanalingham at Salford Royal Foundation Trust (Manchester, UK). Through this fellowship Mr Wang was trained extensively in endoscopic pituitary and anterior skull base surgery, as well as minimally invasive spine surgery and it is these principles that he applies to his neurosurgical practice now. Mr Wang has full access to the latest innovation in spinal surgery, the O-arm intra-operative navigation system to complement his minimally invasive techniques. Mr Wang returned to Melbourne and began practicing as a consultant neurosurgeon. He is a consultant neurosurgeon at St Vincent’s Public Hospital and has appointments with St Vincent’s and Mercy Private, Knox Private and the Epworth Hospitals. His main rooms are at the Mercy Private Hospital, however he also consults regularly at Knox and Epping. He is supervisor of resident training at St Vincent’s Hospital. Mr Wang also takes an active interest in continued technological developments and research. He has completed a Doctor of Medicine through the University of Melbourne (thesis: Gene expression profiling of the ictal hippocampus) and is well published in international peer-reviewed neurosurgical journals. He is currently involved in several research projects in the fields of pituitary adenoma tumorigenesis and spinal navigation. Mr Wang has recently been appointed a Senior Lecturer for the Department of Surgery, St Vincent’s Hospital, the University of Melbourne.
