Dr Luu graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney in 1988, completing her residency at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Following a break in medical training, she resumed her specialist training in psychiatry through the South Eastern Area Health Service, on a part time and full time basis, working in a number of public acute inpatient and outpatient settings.
She has gained a breadth of experience in general adult psychiatry in the public health sector, forensic unit and private hospital, finishing her training at St John of God Burwood Hospital.
She was awarded her Fellowship to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry in 2006.
