Dr Tamsin Cockayne has complemented our GP team at Top End Medical Centre since February 2011, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience from a diverse and multifaceted career in Medicine. Arriving in Darwin in 1999, Dr Tamsin spent 10 years training as a GP in remote areas of the NT including East Arnheim Land and the Tiwi Islands. This dedicated approach to Healthcare in Remote Environments awarded Dr Tamsin her Fellowship of Rural General Practice, and ignited her interest in GP education and awareness. Working FIFO positions with the Department of Health and gaining exposure to the complications and conditions associated with rural living, Dr Tamsin embraced the position of Director of GP Training NT from 2011 to 2015 in a bid to instigate change and raise awareness in General Practice. Dr Tamsin continues to provide clinical support in an advisory capacity to GPs on behalf of NTPHN. Dr Tamsin is an Australian national and commenced her medical studies in Sydney. After completing her residency in Royal Darwin Hospital, Dr Tamsin proceeded to develop skills in Emergency Medicine, Retrieval and Obstetrics. Another pivotal role of repute was Dr Tamsin’s tenure as Director of Medical Service in Gove Hospital from 2006-2009. Dr Tamsin’s special interests include Women’s Health, Chronic Disease Management, GP education, Health systems and the interface of policy with clinical primary care delivery. Future plans for Tamsin include focussing on ante-natal care and maintaining clinical expertise and involvement in shaping Primary Care delivery in the NT.
