Dr Shadforth commenced her medical career nursing at Townsville General Hospital, subsequently transferring to Brisbane to train as a doctor. After two years of postgraduate training, she spent the following year working for six months in ICU, and three months in Respiratory and Emergency Medicine. She then worked for Alcohol and Drug Dependency services for one year. During this time she was actively involved in collaborative research with the University of California Los Angeles and was an author of a scientific paper reporting the discovery of a major risk gene for opioid dependency. The following year she returned to anaesthetic training.

She rotated through a number of hospitals on the Brisbane Southside Anaesthetic Training Scheme and obtained her FANZCA in 1992.

She obtained a consultant position at the then Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital, where she worked half time in the Intensive Care Unit and half time in the Anaesthetic Department. She was actively involved in Registrar and Medical Student teaching, and lectured in the Medical student Curiculum for Anaesthetics for the University of Qld.

When Ramsay Health bought Greenslopes Hospital she became one of the Founding Members of Greenslopes Anaesthesia Services, and sat on the Hospital Medical Advisory board as Chair ofthe Department for eight years. She currently sits on the Board of Greenslopes Anaesthesia Services.

She worked in Cardiac Anaesthesia for ten years. Her areas of interest and expertise include Anaesthesia for Vascular surgery, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Breast and Endocrine, Gastrointestinal and Respiratory procedures, and Anaesthesia for IVF and Gynaecology. She has a special interest in Regional Anaesthesia and its place in post operative multimodal pain relief so that patients experience the best quality of post operative recovery possible. She has a passion for delivering anaesthesia to minimize patient nausea and vomiting. She also has an interest in cosmetic medicine and has completed a number ofworkshops in the discipline, believing people should be able to look and feel the best they can. She has maintained an interest in Addiction Medicine and is a member of the Welfare of Anaesthetist’s Special Interest group.

Dr Shadforth is accredited to work at all Brisbane Metropolitan Hospitals and a number of smaller free standing day units.
