Professor Steven Kossard (MB BS, FACD, PhD, Hon FRCPA) is the Director of Dermatopathology at Kossard Dermatopathologists.
Professor Kossard graduated in Medicine from Sydney University and gained his PhD at the Melanoma Unit under Professor Gerry Milton. He completed his training in clinical dermatology and dermatopathology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and the Mayo Clinic in the United States. In 1980, he established the Dermatopathology Unit at the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia and continuously served there as the Director of Dermatopathology for 35 years, up until the sale of that Unit by the Foundation in early 2016. Professor Kossard has been responsible for training generations of dermatology registrars and pathologists in dermatopathology and its clinical correlates, using his dual skills as a Clinical Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist.
During this period, Professor Kossard has published extensively in scientific peer reviewed journals in dermatology and dermatopathology. He defined a number of internationally recognised concepts and entities, including a nevoid form of melanoma in the elderly, a follicular pathway to skin cancer, subtypes of lymphocytic vasculitis and a distinct form of hair loss with frontal recession in older women. He has over 160 peer reviewed publications and was author of a popular GP series on clinical dermatology and dermoscopy for Medicine Today.
At Kossard Dermatopathologists, Professor Kossard continues to apply his dual skills to mentor and be a consultant within the growing team of specialist Dermatopathologists which he leads. He continues his long-established training programs; convening and leading daily multi-headed microscope sessions with the many dermatopathologist colleagues, other general histopathologists, fellows and trainees who enjoy that unique educational opportunity. He will soon deploy the advanced information technology resources available at Kossard Dermatopathologists to lead teleconferences with dermatology and pathology registrars and other interested practitioners. Those resources will also permit detailed consultation and cooperation between interstate and international Dermatopathologists.
Professor Kossard is honoured to see that his colleagues sought for the brand new, dedicated, state-of-the-art dermatopathology laboratory housing Kossard Dermatopathologists to being named after him. He looks forward to all the continuing academic and personal interactions with colleagues, supporters and students. It is these relationships which have made his professional life so personally rewarding for so many years, and continue to do so at Kossard Dermatopathologists.
