Dr Frederiksen is an upper limb orthopaedic surgeon specialising in surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist including microvascular and peripheral nerve surgery. He has special interest in the management of complex upper limb trauma, and in particular the revascularisation and replantation of severely injured digits and parts.
Dr Frederiksen graduated from the University of Queensland in 1997. He undertook employment as a junior doctor at the Royal Brisbane Hospital before entering full time service in the Royal Australian Air Force in 2000. Within the RAAF, Dr Frederiksen worked in a number of roles, including humanitarian assistance and overseas deployments to areas such as the Solomon Islands, East Timor, Indonesia (Bali) and the Middle East.
Dr Frederiksen returned from military service in 2004 and commenced training in orthopaedic surgery in 2005. This training was undertaken in various locations in southeast Queensland, with a particular focus towards surgery of the upper limb. Dr Frederiksen commenced employment at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital as Director of Orthopaedics in January 2009. This public service involved the supervision of training orthopaedic surgeons as well as the day to day management of the orthopaedic department.
In July 2010, Dr Frederiksen travelled to Auckland for twelve months of focussed training in surgery of the hand, wrist and elbow, including microvascular and peripheral nerve surgery. This work was based in the Orthopaedic Hand Unit, embedded within the Plastic Surgical Department at Middlemore Hospital. Whilst in New Zealand, Dr Frederiksen visited other centres to further his knowledge and skill in upper limb surgery.
Dr Frederiksen maintains an ongoing focus on improving his practice. He regularly attends meetings and courses to improve his surgical skills and update his knowledge. He enjoys ongoing research and encourages his junior medical staff to assist him in research endeavours. Dr Frederiksen has current memberships with the Australian Orthopaedic Association, Australian Medical Association, Queensland Shoulder Society, Queensland Hand Surgery Society and is proud to be a corresponding member of the New Zealand Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr Frederiksen also maintains the position of senior lecturer with the University of Queensland.
Dr Frederiksen maintains public practice through the hand surgical call roster. He consults at Brisbane Private Hospital and operates at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, Spring Hill, Dr Frederiksen also consults at the Brisbane Sports and Exercise Medicine Specialists, Hawthorne, Bundaberg Occupational Therapy in Bundaberg and St Stephen’s Day Hospital, Hervey Bay. Dr Frederiksen remains committed to the care of all of his patients. He is proud to provide a subspecialist hand and upper limb service to the Bundaberg and Fraser Coast district.
