Simon is a graduate of the University of Sydney and the Royal Prince Alfred Clinical School. He trained in neurology at RPAH and then moved to Queen Square in London as the ANZAN fellow. He then moved to Oxford where he undertook doctoral and post-doctoral studies after which he moved to Imperial College London and was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Neurologist, Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust; posts he held until moving to back to Australia in 2004. During his time at Imperial, his group made major breakthroughs in controlling experimental Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, work that was published in the scientific journal, Nature. He returned to the University of Sydney and has been focusing on the blood brain barrier and immunity, mechanisms of prion infection, and developing biomarkers in MS.

Although a general neurologist, Simon has a particular interest in neuroinflammatory diseases such as MS and in neurodegenerative disorders such Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. He serves on the CJD International Support Alliance (CJDISA) - Friends and Advisory Group. As well as his clinical practice in Orange, he holds weekly clinics at Sydney Neurology in Camperdown.
