Dr Hammond has provided a neurology and neurophysiology service in Orange and the Central West of NSW since 1989.

He was born and grew up in England, and he graduated with a MBBS from Guy's Hospital, University of London in 1971. He obtained membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP[ UK]) in 1976. He came to Australia in late 1976 and he attained the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1980 after three years of training in neurology and neurophysiology in Canberra and Perth.

In 1980, he became a research fellow in neurology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Sydney under Professor Jim McLeod. His major projects were a nationwide epidemiological survey of multiple sclerosis (MS), treatment trials of transfer factor and alpha-interferon in MS, and the refinement of visual, brainstem auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials as diagnostic aids in MS. He was awarded a PhD (University of Sydney) in 1988 for his thesis entitled “The Epidemiology of Multiple Sclerosis in Australia”. The results of this study continue to be used by other researchers as a foundation for further research into this disease.

In 1994, he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (FRCP[ UK]).

Dr Hammond was a foundation member of the Central West Parkinson’s Disease Research Group, which was formed in 1993. The group conducted a study into the social and psychological effects of Parkinson’s disease in the Central West, and in 1999 published “Living with Parkinson’s Disease in the Central West of NSW”. Subsequently, the group further expanded that research through supervision of a PhD student, Ian Cooper, which culminated in Dr Cooper’s 2009 thesis “Parkinsonism in Australia”.

Dr Hammond’s contribution and services to medicine and neurology in the Central West of NSW were recognised in the 2006 Australia Day honours, with him being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
