Shane Thompson graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland in 1976 and completed his radiology training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, in 1983. He worked as a staff radiologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (1984–1986) and as a clinical assistant at the Department of Radiodiagnosis, Bristol Royal Infirmary, followed by time as a consultant radiologist at the same hospital (1985). He then moved to the US where he was a radiology research fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston (1985–1986).

Shane returned to Australia as Deputy Director of the Department of Radiology at Princess Alexandra Hospital (1986). He joined Southern X-ray Clinics as a partner based at the Wesley Hospital, Brisbane (1989–1994), and contributed to medical student education as a part-time clinical tutor at the University of Queensland (1984, 1986 and 1987).

Shane moved to the Gold Coast in 1995 to work with South Coast Radiology and was a Partner from 1996 - 2012. He has held Visiting Medical Officer positions at the Gold Coast and Tweed District Hospitals (1995–1998), and was Assistant Professor at the Bond University Medical School (2007–2008).

Shane holds specialist qualifications radiology and nuclear medicine, and is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine. His subspecialty interest areas include diagnostic ultrasound (ASUM member), chest radiology (Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand member) including echocardiography, CT and cardiac nuclear medicine, angiography and basic interventions.

Shane is a member of the Cardiac Imaging Special Interest Group of the RANZCR. He is accredited by the RANZCR in mammography and has accredited supervising radiologist status in MRI. Shane is also an accredited CT Coronary Angiogram reporter.
