A/Prof Sarah Thompson (MBBS, FRACP, PhD) is a gastrointestinal surgeon at Adelaide Gastrointestinal Specialists. She undertook her surgical training in Calgary, Canada in 2004, before taking fellowship positions for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Portland, Oregon, USA and for Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Adelaide, South Australia.

In 2007, she became an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. A year later, she became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 2012, she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree for her work focusing on better diagnostic and staging tools for patients suffering from oesophageal cancer.

Currently, she is the Chair of the South Australian Statewide Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Multidisciplinary meeting which is a leading organisation and the first to successfully telelink five different hospitals. It actively discusses new upper gastrointestinal cancer patients in South Australia.

Dr Thompson is also continuing as a Staff Specialist for the Professional Oesophago-Gastric Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, as well as a senior lecturing post at the University of Adelaide, and an executive position on the New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association.

She is also an active member of Adelaide Gastroenterology, where she specialises in the treatment of oesophageal-reflux disease, achalasia, biliary colic, and large hiatus hernias, alongside Gastric and Oesophageal cancers.
