Dr Van der Westhuizen undertook his specialist anaesthetic training in Queensland after working in South Africa and England.
He has a broad spectrum of interest and has completed a combined airway and vascular anaesthesia fellowship.
He is a senior lecturer at the School of Medicine, University of Queensland. He holds a public appointment as a Visiting Specialist at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he is involved in teaching and training of anaesthetic registrars as well as perioperative audit processes.
