A/Professor Haslam primarily sees young babies and toddlers. He was the Head of the Neonatal Medicine Department at first at the Queen Victoria Hospital and then the Women'’s and Children'’s Hospital from 1979 - – 2011. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in both the disciplines of Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Adelaide’'s Faculty of Health Sciences. He retired from active clinical care at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in May 2014.

After caring for critically ill and premature newborns for many years and following their progress as they grew older, he now primarily cares for babies and toddlers at Paediatrics at Burnside. His special interest and expertise is for the newly born and their subsequent nutrition, growth and development as well as general problems during the first years of life.

He is an author of over 150 scientific papers, book chapters and invited lectures related to the care of newborns. In 2012 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his work in the field of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine. He lives close to the hospital and has four children and (currently!) six grandchildren.
