Dr Hilling-Smith performs a wide range of percutaneous interventional procedures including coronary stents, rotablation and chronic total occlusion revascularisation. He performs the full range of structural interventions including TAVI, PFO / ASD closure, percutaneous treatments of aortic and mitral valves, left atrial appendage occlusion and renal denervation amongst others.

Dr Hilling-Smith is a TAVI proctor, providing on-site training, evaluation and observation of other cardiologists and healthcare professionals on the safe and correct use of transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He ensures appropriate selection of patient, device and system, implant technique, and recognises and addresses special clinical conditions, such as potential complications.

He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, Scotland. He trained in general medicine at Fremantle Hospital and cardiology at the prestigious MonashHeart in Melbourne. He has undertaken two interventional fellowships, firstly locally at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. He was then awarded the Chamberlain Scholarship in Advanced Coronary and Structural Intervention at the world renowned Royal Sussex County Hospital, England. During his time there, Dr Hilling-Smith was involved in many international trials and several first-in-man developments.

Dr Hilling-Smith is now a proctor (teaches other consultants) in structural techniques including TAVI procedure. He has published several research manuscripts, written a book chapter and spoken at international conferences. He is involved in several ongoing collaborative research projects, primarily in the field of improving patient outcomes following percutaneous structural intervention.

Dr Hilling-Smith is a VMO at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill, Mater Hospital (both public and private), Greenslopes Hospital and St Andrew’s Hospital in Ipswich.
