Dr Roger Watson (MBBS, FRACS Urol), is a Urologist with a special interest in the urological care of the spectrum of genitourinary cancer (urological oncology) in adult men and women, as well as the management of lower urinary tract dysfunction, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He is a visiting Consultant Urologist at the Mater Private and Adult Hospitals, and Greenslopes Private and North West Private Hospitals, in Brisbane. A major focus is the evaluation and management of prostate cancer, including detailed evaluation of individual prostate cancer risk, prostate imaging and biopsy, prostate cancer surgery, particularly robotic radical prostatectomy and prostate radiation treatment with brachytherapy. Another of his major subspecialty focuses is bladder cancer. This includes specific diagnostic studies, surgical and non-surgical management options, including laparoscopic surgery and complex urinary reconstruction. He also practices in other areas of adult urology, which includes all prostate disease, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). He has undergone further training in the use of the Greenlight laser as a management option for BPH, as laser photovaporisation (PVP). The focus on subspecialty urological cancer care includes multidisciplinary clinic interaction with other cancer specialists, particularly in the areas of pathology, radiology, radiation and medical oncology. This occurs in both the private and public Urology Departments at the Mater and Greenslopes Hospitals. He is affiliated with Mater Research Institute, ANZUP (Australia New Zealand Genitourinary clinical trails cooperative) and advanced urological training through the RACS. He is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical student education, including as Chairman of Urological training, Mater Hospitals for 15 years. After completing medical training at the University of Queensland in 1984, he commenced training in surgery, and went on to complete urological specialty training in Brisbane in 1993. He then undertook further training in the United Kingdom (Reconstructive Urology Fellowship at Guy'’s Hospital, London) and the USA (Urological Oncology Fellowship at the University of Miami, Florida). Since his return to Brisbane in 1996, he has continued to develop his subspecialty interest in the diagnosis and management of urological cancer, particularly bladder, prostate and kidney cancer. This has included further training in robotic prostatic surgery, bladder cancer, prostate brachytherapy and laparoscopic renal surgery. With colleagues, he established the first robotic surgical program in Brisbane at Greenslopes Private Hospital, as part of Queensland Robotic Surgery, in 2008. He was one of the first Queensland urologists to perform robotic radical prostatectomy, and continues as an integral part of this program today. He was a collaborative author on the recent ‘International Urological Disease Classification Consensus Statement on Bladder Cancer Management.’ Research interests include clinical and basic science aspects of bladder, prostate and kidney cancer. He has published extensively in the medical literature. In addition to his private practice, he has continued to work as a consultant specialist at the Mater Adults Hospital since 1996, and is currently the Director of Urology, with involvement in training and evaluation of urological surgeons.
