I am a New Zealander and have worked there virtually all my professional career in Wellington, Palmerston North and Auckland. Sue, my wife, is Australian from Canberra and for many years we have holidayed here. We are pleased to have fulfilled a long term plan to live permanently in this most beautiful place. I am registered as a specialist urologist with the AHPRA and with Medicare Australia for urological services at Mogo Day Surgery. At Mogo Day Surgery I offer urological consultations, urological investigations such as flexible cystoscopy, TRUS prostate biopsies, urodynamics, and appropriate day case surgery including minor scrotal surgery and a range of cystoscopic procedures. For problems requiring major inpatient surgery I offer appropriate assessment and investigation, trial or exclusion of non-surgical treatments, then referral on to a main centre urologist for appropriate inpatient surgery. Then subsequent local assistance with post-operative follow up where appropriate. I have 35 years experience as a consultant urologist. I am broadly interested across the speciality. I have special interests in recurring urinary infection, haematuria, incontinence issues, prostate problems including obstruction and infection, PSA issues, prostate cancer, urinary calculi, bladder cancer, vasectomy. Concerning prostate cancer and PSA issues I have been on the medical committee of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand for 12 years, and a member of New Zealand Ministry of Health advisory groups and task forces concerning this. I am an advocate of regular PSA and DRE screening for men with informed consent. I have practiced and advocated active surveillance for gentle forms of prostate cancer for many years, as well as having an extensive experience of Radical Prostatectomy. I am interested in benign causes of higher PSA’s especially the common one of prostate infection, being eliminated before TRUS biopsy is considered. I have performed more than 1500 TRUS biopsies and have more than 1000 men with prostate cancer in my NZ practice audit system. It follows that I have long experience helping men with a new diagnosis of prostate cancer make their choice, aided by information material, appropriate booklets and websites, talking to other patients. I shall offer this at Mogo Day Surgery Clinic. I have a special interest in shock wave lithotripsy for urinary calculi and served on the Board of Directors of MMT, the NZ company which runs the national mobile lithotripter, for 13 years. I have a long interest in endoscopy for calculi including ureteroscopy, PCN, laser. I worked in the New Zealand Public Hospital system in Wellington and Palmerston North for 23 years, including terms as Chair of the Theatre Committee and of the Combined Surgeons Committee of Palmerston North Hospital, of the Urology Department there for 10 years, and Chair of the ANZ Association of Urological Surgeons, NZ Section for 6 years. I have been in private specialist urological practice in NZ for 35 years. Over the years I have presented 33 papers to major scientific meetings, including many at Urological Society ASM’s in Australia, and have 15 publications in the refereed medical literature. I have had an interest in medical politics and was on the Board of Governance of the NZ Medical Association for 7 years, including 5 years as Treasurer and 4 years as Chair of the NZ Medical Journal Management Committee. I was made a Fellow of the Association in 2010. Sue and I have 9 children between us and so far 10 grandchildren! I have a life long passion for sailing, including four ocean crossings, canoeing and fishing. Sue is very interested in art, literature, music which I share at a lower level than her. We both love the many beautiful walks here, and the amazing coastline.
