Dr Richard Skoien became a full-time medical practitioner after completing degrees in Arts, Law and Science at The University of Queensland. He graduated from Medical School in 2001 and trained in Queensland (principally at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital) before undertaking specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology between 2007-2009. He undertook a PhD at the Princess Alexandra Hospital under the mentorship of Prof Elizabeth Powell, Assoc Prof Julie Jonsson and Assoc Prof Andrew Clouston in the field of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). He has been a staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital since 2012 and was awarded his PhD (School of Medicine, University of Queensland) in the study of novel pathogenic mechanisms in NAFLD in 2013.

He is currently devoted to his clinical work, the development of a Hepatology research programme at the RBWH, and translational research in the field of chronic liver disease and its complications, including hepatocellular carcinoma. Dr Skoien has numerous publications and citations and has been recognised for his research by his peers. His work also involves acting as a mentor to students and doctors in training as well as professional contributions as an expert, advisor and critic in the field of Hepatology.
