Dr Richard Clugston is an interventional cardiologist and trained in Perth and in the USA. His primary interests are coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting in stable angina and in acute coronary syndromes.
He has special expertise in the management of acute myocardial infarction using direct angioplasty. Dr Clugston was instrumental in setting up Australia's first acute infarct angioplasty service. His other area of interest is in the recently named "structural heart disease". This includes the closure of patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defects and more recently percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion. It is thought that as the majority of emboli causing stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation arise from the LAA, occlusion of the LAA may obviate the need for warfarin. By implication at present LAA occlusion may be useful in carefully selected patients with AF in whom warfarin is contraindicated, especially where the risk of thromboembolic stroke is high.
Clugston works at both Cardio Vascular Services (CVS) at Hollywood Hospital and in East Fremantle as well as, has a public hospital appointment at Fiona Stanley Hospital.
