I don't recall ever wanting to be anything other than a doctor. Throughout my childhood growing up in North and Central Queensland, I always loved learning about the human body and felt a need to care and nurture. On moving to Cairns in 1995 to complete high school, I found a love for biology and science that cemented my career path. Though I undertook my university studies in Brisbane (graduating from a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Science) in 2002 and a Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery from University of Queensland in 2006), I always felt an inexplicable pull back to this magical landscape of rainforest covered mountains, and the down to earth, friendly people that call this piece of paradise home. After spending my hospital years working with the fine doctors and nurses at Cairns Hospital (Cairns Base as it was known way back then!), I spent a few more years working in various locations in rural Queensland and Victoria, and gaining my GP fellowship. I completed a Family Planning Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health, and have my sights set next on a Diploma of Child Health. I thoroughly enjoy each and every day that I spend doing this job, and am truly humbled by the trust that my patients put in me. No two days are the same, and rather than pretending that I know all of the answers, I prefer to take my time to listen to my patients and collaboratively work towards a patient-centred solution. I love to have a good laugh and try not to take myself too seriously. I am unfortunately well known for the occasional naughty word to pop out and have now adopted a charity Swear Jar in my consulting room. I pride myself on being thorough, kind and approachable. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two beautiful children, spending time in the garden and hunting down a bargain at the local op shop.
