Dr Rajiv Mahajan graduated from the University of Delhi in 1997. He continued his Physician training at the University of Delhi and then Cardiology training at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. His specialist training has been recognised by the RACP and he has been awarded fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2013. He further undertook 4 year clinical training in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide. During the four year training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Dr Mahajan developed a significant expertise in pacing, defibrillation, cardiac resynchronization and complex catheter ablation techniques used for the treatment of a variety of arrhythmias with a particular focus on atrial fibrillation. He is a fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society, USA.
Dr Mahajan was awarded the Australian Post Graduate Award and the Leo J Mahar Scholarship to pursue his PhD at the University of Adelaide under the mentorship of Prof Prash Sanders. The work from his PhD provides mechanistic link between obesity and atrial fibrillation and demonstrated that intervention by weight reduction may favourably impact obesity related AF substrate. He has received several local, national and international awards for his work. These include the prestigious Ralph Reader prize, Cardiology Society of Australia and New Zealand (2013) and the Young Investigator Award, Heart Rhythm Society, USA (2013). He has been awarded the first prize, Best Oral abstract at the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society meeting in 2013. His PhD received the Dean’s commendation for thesis excellence in 2014.
Dr Mahajan is currently appointed to the position of Leo J Mahar Lecturer at the Centre of Heart Rhythm Disorders, University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital. He also holds a faculty position at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. Dr Mahajan is involved in mentoring several research and medical students. He has published widely in peer reviewed journals and has over 50 publications and book chapters and over 100 abstracts. Dr Mahajan is interested in research leading to improvement of the care of patients with heart rhythm disorders and heart failure. He has a particular interest in the modification of its risk factors and interventions aimed at improving outcomes of patients with atrial fibrillation. In addition, he is interested in investigating the potential ways that can reduce the burden of atrial fibrillation related stroke in the general population.
Dr Mahajan is interested in all aspects of clinical cardiology but has special interest in the management of arrhythmias (such as supraventricular, ventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation), pacing and heart failure. He undertakes pacemaker implants, cardiac defibrillator implants, cardiac resynchronization, device follow ups and electrophysiology study and ablation. Although trained in all areas of complex ablation Dr Mahajan has a focus on supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and idiopathic ventricular tachycardia. He consults at the Cardiovascular Centre, Norwood and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He has admission rights and undertakes procedures in Wakefield Calvary Hospital, Ashford Hospital and St Andrews Hospitals.
