A/Prof Wijeratne graduated in medicine from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He trained in psychiatry at Concord Hospital, Sydney, and the Maudsley Hospital, London. He then undertook a postgraduate research degree in the area of fatigue. His current positions are Senior Psychiatrist, Academic Department for Old Age Psychiatry, Prince of Wales Hospital; and Associate Professor (Adjunct), School of Medicine Sydney, University of Notre Dame Australia. He was a founding Board member of Capacity Australia.
His areas of specific clinical interest and expertise are:
Mood disorders Cognitive/neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease Assessment of capacity (testamentary capacity, power of attorney & guardian) Assessment of capacity to practise in healthcare practitioners (consultant to the NSW Medical Council’s Health Program, and consultant to the NSW Nursing and Midwifery Council) Accredited assessor of permanent psychiatric impairment for MAA and WorkCover. He has expertise in psychopharmacology, electroconvulsive therapy (including previously acting as the ECT service director at two teaching hospitals), and psychological therapy (in particular, he has received supervision in family systems theory). He is an active researcher who has received several research grants, and is regularly invited to speak at professional conferences.
