Dr Burke was raised in Brisbane and graduated with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from University of Queensland in 1994. He undertook research into Prostate Cancer at St George Hospital, Sydney in 2001 and successfully completed FRACS (Urology) in Brisbane in 2004. Presentation of this research earned him the Villis Marshall Research Prize and the Karl Storz Travelling Fellowship at the Urological Society of Australasia Annual Scientific Meeting in 2005.
He undertook a Fellowship position in Oxford, United Kingdom during 2005-2006, encompassing a Clinical role at the Churchill Hospital in addition to Academic duties through the Oxford University Medical School.
He has a particular interest in laparoscopic urological surgery and gained valuable experience in that regard during his Fellowship in Oxford. He also has an interest in complicated urinary stone disease and advanced renal stone surgery.
