Dr Murphy completed his medical degree at the University of Otago in 1993. Following this he spent three years gaining further experience in a number of specialties including emergency medicine and paediatrics. He completed a Diploma in Paediatrics through Auckland University in 1995.
He received his specialist qualification from the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2004 after more than six years training in anaesthesia and intensive care in New Zealand, United Kingdom & Australia.
Since that time he has been working as a Specialist Anaesthetist on the Tweed and Gold Coasts. He is accredited at all of the major private hospitals on the Gold Coast, the Gold Coast University Hospital and the Tweed Hospital where he is currently Head of Department.
He is also a regular participant in the Maintenance of Professional Standards Program from the College of Anaesthetists.
